Managing the launch of new Private Assets Funds

We delivered a scalable private equity and debt target operating model for a global asset manager

The challenge

Our client, a global asset manager, announced in 2021 an allocation of £5 billion into ESG focused privately-owned enterprises. A new 25-strong global investment team was created with flexibility to invest in private credit, real and financial assets and private equity.

PEN was engaged to programme manage the design and implementation of the Target Operting Model to support the people, process and technology builds for these new funds.

The primary goal was to remove the operational burden from the Investment Desk and design a scalable solution to support the business going forward.

Our approach

Applying our Private Asset operating model knowledge and experienced team, PEN set out to deliver the following:

  • Programme management and oversight of the OpModel design and delivery
  • Process mapping key deliverables leading to the identification and implementation of improvement opportunities
  • Project management of Technology builds and data quality enhancements, providing Portfolio Managers with richer data to drive enhanced strategic decision making
  • Oversight of external dependencies feeding into the OpModel
  • Formation of a dedicated Deal Monitoring team in Mumbai to capture pre/post deal data

The outcome

PEN successfully helped our client deliver the target operating model to time and on budget over a 12 month period.

The improvements allowed the Investment Teams to focus on their core job of strategic decision making by reassigning non-investment tasks to support functions.

Efficiencies to technology platforms and improvements to data quality allowed the development of enhanced client reports and portfolio management dashboards.

Leveraging offshore capabilities continues to allow the team to scale up their operations in a cost efficient manner as the fund looks to deploy it’s committed capital of £5bn.
